Abstract A mathematical shape representative of the shell of the egg of a domestic fowl is proposed and a stress analysis is carried out for the shell when it is subjected to internal pressure. Algebraic expressions for the membrane solution are seen to give a close approximation to the complete analysis.

Identification and localization of lysozyme as a component of eggshell membranes and eggshell matrix
Matrix Biology, 2000The avian eggshell is a composite biomaterial composed of non-calcifying eggshell membranes and the overlying calcified shell matrix. The calcified shell forms in a uterine fluid where the concentration of different protein species varies between the initial, rapid calcification and terminal phases of eggshell deposition.

Relationship between eggshell strength and keratan sulfate of eggshell membranes
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2007Eggshell strength is an important factor in an effort to minimize eggshell breakage, which is a significant problem in the egg production industry. In the current study, we isolated and quantified the specific glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from the calcified eggshell and shell membranes, which are related to eggshell strength.

Eggshell waste as catalyst: A review
Journal of Environmental Management, 2017Agricultural wastes are some of the most emerging problems in food industries because of their disposal cost. However, it is also an opportunity for the bioeconomy society if new uses for these residual materials can be found. Eggshells, considered a hazardous waste by UE regulations, are discarded, amounting hundreds of thousands of tonnes worldwide ...

Morphogenesis of the eggshells in Drosophila
2000The Drosophila eggshell is a specialized extracellular matrix that forms between the oocyte and overlaying somatic follicle cells during the latter stages of oogenesis. Largely proteinaceous, the eggshell is a highly organized multilayered structure with regional specializations designed to perform a variety of functions.

Avian eggs possess very efficient and orchestrated systems to protect the embryo during incubation, until hatch. Although the internal components of the egg are assumed to be sterile, the surface of the eggshell is covered by microbes (essentially bacteria) that may contribute to prevent eggshell colonization by pathogenic bacteria, through direct ...

Thinning of eggshells in birds by DDE: Mode of action on the eggshell gland
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 1987Abstract 1. The mode of action of DDE and similar compounds on the thinning of eggshells—often combined with shell breakage—is discussed and related to what is known about their formation and especially the Ca2+ metabolism of the shell gland. The effect is one of several actions these compounds have on reproduction. 2.
