1. Administration of furosemide to egg-laying domestic fowl (single p.o. dose 100 mg/bird) caused a decrease in the thickness of the shell of eggs laid the next day. 2. Furosemide administration in vivo caused a 37% decrease in the uptake of 45Ca2+ by a subcellular fraction of the eggshell gland mucosa (mainly composed of cell fragments and plasma ...

Infuence of dietary calcium, selenium, and methylmercury on eggshell thickness in Japanese quail
Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1978A high Ca, semi-purified diet promoted greater egg production with thicker shells in Japanese quail hens. 7 ppm of dietary Se depressed egg weights with no effect on eggshell thickness. The addition of 20 ppm of MHg to either a low or high Ca diet containing Se depressed both egg production and eggshell thickness.

Eggshell Thickness Changes in Pacific Ocean Phaethontidae and Sulidae
The Condor, 1979Pesticide-induced eggshell thinning and associated reproductive problems have been documented in several species of the Pelecaniformes. Numerous populations of Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) and Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) have been adversely affected by pesticides, especially DDE (Anderson et al. 1969, Stickel 1973, Blus

Abstract The presence of hydroxyapatite (HAp) in the Cuticle of laying hen eggshells was investigated through an extensive and detailed study combining scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), as well as micro-Raman, micro-FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG ...
