Herons in Aquafarms Are More Fearful of Humans [PDF]
Herons (Ardeidae), an important group in wetland ecosystems, have a particularly strong relationship with humans. However, their predation on farmed fish and shrimp in aquafarms can lead to economic losses for local fish farmers.

Sky High or Grounded: Nest Site Selection of Herons and Egrets in a Mixed‐Species Colony [PDF]
Resource partitioning is crucial for the coexistence of colonial herons, as it allows multiple species to share the same habitat while minimising competition.

Flyway-Scale Assessment of Habitat Suitability and Key Environmental Drivers for Waterbirds in Southern China. [PDF]
This study assessed the distribution of suitable habitats and ecological drivers for 47 waterbird species in eastern and southern China (south of the 800 mm isohyet), revealing a clear coastal‐to‐inland gradient, with NDVI and DEM identified as key environmental variables. Different ecological groups exhibited distinct habitat preferences.

Mangrove Habitats in Zhanjiang of South China: A Potentially High-Risk Environment for Breeding Birds. [PDF]
Mangroves are important feeding and wintering grounds for many birds. However, we still know little about the risk of nest predation experienced by birds breeding in mangrove habitats. The nest predation rates were 100% for the experimental nests in mangroves within 7 days, with diverse predators. Birds breeding in Zhangjiang mangrove habitats of south

From Barns to Bushes: Exploring the ECOFF-Based Non-Wild-Type Status of Campylobacter spp. in Pets, Livestock, Synanthropic Birds and Wild Animals in Northwestern Italy. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Introduction Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to both humans and animals. Zoonotic bacteria, such as Campylobacter, contribute to human infections and the spread of AMR, particularly through livestock, pets and wildlife. We investigated the prevalence, distribution and EUCAST ECOFF‐based wild‐type (WT) vs.

Avian malaria is absent in juvenile colonial herons (Ardeidae) but not Culex pipiens mosquitoes in the Camargue, Southern France [PDF]
Apicomplexan blood parasites Plasmodium and Haemoproteus (together termed “Avian malaria”) and Leucocytozoon are widespread, diverse vector-transmitted blood parasites of birds, and conditions associated with colonial nesting in herons (Ardeidae) and ...

The evolution, distribution and diversity of endogenous circoviral elements in vertebrate genomes [PDF]
Circoviruses (family Circoviridae) are small, non-enveloped viruses that have short, single-stranded DNA genomes. Circovirus sequences are frequently recovered in metagenomic investigations, indicating that these viruses are widespread, yet they remain ...
