Role of the domestic dog as a reservoir host of Leishmania donovani in eastern Sudan

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2009
Background The study aims to determine the role of domestic dogs in transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in eastern Sudan. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 10 villages along the River Rahad in eastern Sudan to elucidate the role of domestic ...

Morphological Characterization of the Lingual Papillae of the Golden Jackal (Canis aureus): A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 5, September 2026.
Scanning electron microscopy of the Canis aureus tongue identified four distinct papilla types filiform, conical, fungiform and circumvallate, serving mechanical and gustatory functions. The absence of foliate papillae alongside distinct conical morphology reflects evolutionary adaptations optimized for rapid mechanical food processing.

Mesocarnivore community structure under predator control: Unintended patterns in a conservation context.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Across the Mediterranean, conservation programmes often operate concomitantly with hunting interests within game-lands. Carnivore guilds lie at the interface between contrasting management goals, being simultaneously fundamental components of ecosystems ...

Knee height is often right: evaluating device height effects on camera trapping rate

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 12, Issue 4, Page 531-544, August 2026.
Camera trap deployment height can introduce systematic biases in detection trapping rates across species of different body sizes. Combining 172 paired sampling points in five experiments across Europe, North America and Africa, our results show that low cameras significantly increase detections of small‐ and medium‐sized species, whereas high cameras ...

Mammal Responses to Habitat Degradation Induced by Cashew Expansion in West Africa

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 29, Issue 2, Page 169-182, April 2026.
Relationships between (a) estimated mammal species richness, (b) overall mammal species photographic rate, (c) carnivore photographic rate, (d) insectivore photographic rate, (e) omnivore photographic rate and (f) herbivore photographic rate and the local habitat characteristics as denoted by the scores of the first component of the Principal Component

Quantifying functionally equivalent species and ecological network dissimilarity with optimal transport distances

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 301-321, February 2026.
Abstract Quantifying the structure and dynamics of species interactions in ecological communities is fundamental to studying ecology and evolution. While there are numerous approaches to analysing ecological networks, there is not yet an approach that can (1) quantify dissimilarity in the global structure of ecological networks that range from ...

Farmland abandonment and season drive scavenging dynamics in livestock‐rewilded landscapes

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 35, Issue 8, December 2025.
Abstract Farmland abandonment occurs commonly across European mountain regions, which causes triggering of habitat encroachment through shrub regeneration and natural afforestation. However, its impact on vertebrate scavenger communities and ecological processes, such as the removal of small carcasses remains poorly understood.

An evaluation of techniques used for the capture, immobilization and radio collaring of Saharan striped polecat

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue 4, December 2025.
Summary of methods for capturing, immobilizing, and radio collaring Saharan striped polecats in central Tunisia (2019–2022). Spotlighting with a hand net was the only effective capture technique, and ketamine–medetomidine provided adequate handling time. ATS and WMI collars, with flexible antennas and cable‐tie attachments, performed best.

Impact of animal socioecology on gut microbial communities: Insights from wild meerkats in the Kalahari

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 12, Page 2687-2703, December 2025.
Our study addresses critical gaps at the nexus of animal and microbial ecologies, adding much‐needed empirical support to recent theoretical frameworks that have conceptualised gut microbiomes as being strongly influenced by animal sociality and group‐living, and bringing benefits that may have strongly (and reciprocally) influenced the evolution of ...
