Das Gesundheitswesen, 2004Einleitung: Am Niedersachsischen Landesgesundheitsamt werden seit 1997 systematisch flachendeckende Daten zu niedersachsischen EHEC-Fallen (=EHEC-Erkrankungen und –Labornachweise sowie HUS-Erkrankungen) aufgrund von Meldungen durch Arzte und Labore erhoben. Seit 2001 erfolgt diese Erhebung auf Basis des Infektionsschutzgesetzes.

Current Opinion in Microbiology, 2006During the course of infection, enteropathogenic and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EPEC and EHEC, respectively) subvert the host cell signalling machinery and hijack the actin cytoskeleton to tighten their interaction with the gut epithelium, while avoiding phagocytosis by professional phagocytes.

A sticky business in EHEC pathogenesis
Trends in Microbiology, 2002Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) serotype O157:H7 is the agent responsible for numerous outbreaks of bloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome throughout the world. Thus far, only two pathogenic mechanisms have been established for EHEC: the production of Shiga toxins and attaching and effacing (AE) lesions.

Most strains of E. coli are harmless. Some strains however, such as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), can cause severe foodborne disease. It is transmitted to humans primarily through consumption of contaminated foods, such as raw meal.

Fecally contaminated food and water are the source of E. coli infections in humans.
