Detection of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) -1, -2, -4 and -5 in Ethiopian Equids with and without Respiratory Problems and Genetic Characterization of EHV-2 and EHV-5 Strains

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, 2017
Infections with equine herpesviruses (EHVs) are widespread in equine populations worldwide. Whereas both EHV-1 and EHV-4 produce well-documented respiratory syndromes in equids, the contribution of EHV-2 and EHV-5 to disease of the respiratory tract is still enigmatic.

Detection and quantitation of equid gammaherpesviruses (EHV-2, EHV-5) in nasal swabs using an accredited standardised quantitative PCR method

Journal of Virological Methods, 2014
Equid gammaherpesviruses-2 and -5 are involved in respiratory problems, with potential clinical manifestations such as nasal discharge, pharyngitis and swollen lymph nodes. These viruses are sometimes associated with a poor-performance syndrome, which may result in a significant and negative economic impact for the horse industry.

Third Eyelid T-cell-Rich Large B-cell Lymphoma Positive to EHV-5 in a Mare—a Case Report

Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, 2018
Abstract Lymphoma is a rare neoplasm in the horse; nevertheless, it is the most frequent hematopoietic neoplasia in this species. It is classified according to the anatomical distribution of the lesion in multicenter, alimentary, mediastinal, cutaneous, and atypical/solitary form. Extraocular lymphoma mainly occurs as secondary lesion in cutaneous or

Detection of equine herpesvirus types 2 and 5 (EHV-2 and EHV-5) in Przewalski’s wild horses

Archives of Virology, 1999
In blood samples of seven captive equid species from four German zoos EHV-1 specific antibodies were detected in 76% and EHV-4 specific antibodies in 73% of the 55 animals, whereas 93% were tested positive for EHV-2 and EHV-5, respectively. In only one blood sample from a Przewalski's wild horse EHV-4 DNA was amplified by PCR.

Prevalence of equine gammaherpesviruses on breeding farms in Turkey and development of a TaqMan MGB real-time PCR to detect equine herpesvirus 5 (EHV-5)

Archives of Virology, 2014
Equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV-2) and EHV-5 are members of the subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae. The viruses are detected in horses with upper respiratory tract disease and are associated with low performance in racehorses. The aim of the current study was to use nested PCR to investigate the epidemiology of EHV-2 and EHV-5 in Arabian horse populations ...

Vergleich der ophthalmologischen Veränderungen bei EHV - 2-, EHV - 5- und nicht infizierten Pferden und Ermittlung der Prävalenz dieser Viren bei augenkranken bzw. augengesunden Pferden

2011
The aim of this study was to compare the symptoms of a group of horses with ocular disease and EHV - 2 – or EHV - 5 – infection with a group without viral infection. The EHV - positive group consisted of 131 horses, which were presented to the ophthalmology service at the Vetsuisse Faculty Veterinary Teaching hospital between 2001 and 2010.
