Mass Ejection from the Remnant of a Binary Neutron Star Merger: Viscous-Radiation Hydrodynamics Study

open access: yes, 2018
We perform long-term general relativistic neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations (in axisymmetry) for a massive neutron star (MNS) surrounded by a torus, which is a canonical remnant formed after the binary neutron star merger. We take into account

Quasi‐Periodic Surface Functionalization by Ultra‐Short Pulsed Laser Processing: Unlocking Superior Heat Transfer in Vapor Chambers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ultra‐short pulsed laser processing (ULSP) enables scalable, open‐air fabrication of self‐organized, quasi‐periodic micro/nanostructures on copper using 100 µm laser beams, orders of magnitude larger than the resulting surface features. Integrated into ultra‐thin, wick‐free vapor chambers, these laser‐functionalized surfaces dramatically enhance ...

Correlation of β-adrenergic reactivity of erythrocyte membranes with clinical characteristics of patients with coronary artery disease and HF with preserved and reduced ejection fraction

open access: yesРоссийский кардиологический журнал
Aim. To evaluate β-adrenergic reactivity of erythrocyte membranes (β-ARM) depending on clinical parameters in patients with heart failure (HF) with preserved and reduced ejection fraction (EF), who had prior myocardial infarction.Material and methods ...

Preoperative ejection fraction as a predictor of survival after coronary artery bypass grafting: comparison with a matched general population

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2010
Background Preoperative left ventricular dysfunction is an established risk factor for early and late mortality after revascularization. This retrospective analysis demonstrates the effects of preoperative ejection fraction on the short-term and long ...

Prevalence of prediabetes and undiagnosed diabetes in patients with HFpEF and HFrEF and associated clinical outcomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Purpose: The prevalence and consequences of prediabetic dysglycemia and undiagnosed diabetes is unknown in patients with heart failure (HF) and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and has not been compared to heart failure and reduced ejection ...

Unlocking the Full Potential of MgAgSb by Unravelling the Interrelation of Phase Constitution and Thermoelectric Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Persistent secondary phases govern the performance of many thermoelectric materials, particularly of high performance MgAgSb. In this study advanced microstructural characterization for unequivocal phase identification combined with transport modeling and statistical analysis enabled the quantification of each phase's impact, revealing the most ...

Current Treatment of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction: Should We Add Life to the Remaining Years or Add Years to the Remaining Life?

open access: yesCardiology Research and Practice, 2013
According to the ejection fraction, patients with heart failure may be divided into two different groups: heart failure with preserved or reduced ejection fraction. In recent years, accumulating studies showed that increased mortality and morbidity rates

Lithopanspermia in Star Forming Clusters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper considers the lithopanspermia hypothesis in star forming groups and clusters, where the chances of biological material spreading from one solar system to another is greatly enhanced (relative to the field) due to the close proximity of the ...

CO2 Reduction on Copper‐Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Catalysts Tuned by Pulsed Potential Electrolysis: Effect of Pulse Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that pulsed potential electrolysis significantly improves CO2 reduction performance on copper‐nitrogen doped carbon electrodes. The formation of cationic copper sites and metallic clusters as a function of applied intermittent potential leads to notable selectivity changes compared to potentiostatic reduction.
