Ekman Transport and Zooplankton Concentration in the North Pacific Ocean
Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, 1967Annual concentrations of zooplankton off California varied directly, and concentrations in the western Bering Sea varied indirectly with calculated southerly components of Ekman transport in the previous year at 50°N,140°W. This point is in the area in which surface subarctic water and the deeper currents divide north and south.

The Balance of Geostrophic and Ekman Transports in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1983Abstract Hydrographic station data from 24°N, 8°N, 8°S and 24°S in the Atlantic Ocean are used to calculate geostrophic transport in eight layers separated by isopycnal surfaces. In the upper ocean, the geostrophic transport is strongly northward across 8°S and strongly southward across 8°N resulting in a geostrophic convergence of ∼25 × 106 m2 s−1 in ...

Effects of Ekman Transport on the NAO Response to a Tropical Atlantic SST Anomaly
Journal of Climate, 2006Abstract A recent study showed that a tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly induces a significant coupled response in late winter [February–April (FMA)] in a coupled model, in which an atmospheric general circulation model is coupled to a slab mixed layer ocean model (AGCM_ML). The coupled response comprises a dipole in

The Role of Ekman Ocean Heat Transport in the Northern Hemisphere Response to ENSO
Journal of Climate, 2008Abstract The influence of oceanic Ekman heat transport (Qek) on air–sea variability associated with ENSO teleconnections is examined via a pair of atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) experiments. In the mixed layer model (MLM) experiment, observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) for the years 1950–99 are specified over the ...

The Time-varying Characteristics of the Meridional Ekman Heat Transport for the World Ocean
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1993Abstract The time-varying meridional Ekman heat transport for the World Ocean is calculated for the 30-year period 1960–1989 using wind stress and sea surface temperature data from the Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Data Set The average monthly heat transports are dominated by poleward transport of heat in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Pollutant Dispersion in the Ekman Layer Using Moment-Reduced Transport Equations
1983The program MODIS (Moment Distribution) is designed to extend the Gaussian plume model up to the range of about 102 km. Numerical experiments with stationary solutions are reported to show reliability and accuracy (essentially dependent on the grid Peclet number) of the results. The influence of the Coriolis force on the ground centre line of the plume

Turbulence avoidance and the wind-driven transport of plankton in the surface Ekman layer
Continental Shelf Research, 2007Observations of turbulence avoidance in zooplankton are compared to estimates of the wind-driven turbulence in the upper ocean. Plankton that avoid wind-driven turbulence by moving deeper are no longer transported by the wind-driven Ekman currents near the surface because they are no longer near the surface.
