Terrestrial Establishment of Strangler Figs in Burned Tropical Peat Swamp Forests, Sumatra, Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
Strangler figs (Ficus spp.) typically establish as epiphytes on host trees. Here we document abundant terrestrial establishment of strangler figs in burned tropical peat‐swamp forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. Given their abundance, flexible establishment mode, and role as keystone species supporting frugivore communities, naturally regenerating strangler

Beyond protected areas: The importance of mixed‐use landscapes for the conservation of Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) [PDF]

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) were once widely distributed across the Indonesian island of Sumatra but now exist in small, isolated populations. We used random forest modeling in a Google Earth Engine (GEE) environment to model habitat suitability.

Nutritional Importance of a Liana Species for a Population of Bornean Orangutans [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 186, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Objectives Temporal variation in food availability can pose nutritional challenges to primates. Characterizing the nutritional content of the non‐preferred foods that primates switch to, termed fallback foods, is useful for identifying the nutritional challenges of lean periods, the nutritional limits of what primates can subsist on, and ...

Growth form, regeneration mode, and vegetation type explain leaf trait variability at the species and community levels in Mediterranean woody vegetation [PDF]

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2024.
We found a large amount of leaf trait variability within and among species in Mediterranean plant communities. However, functional groups (resprouting ability, regeneration strategy, growth form) and vegetation type still accounted for a significant part of this variability.

Bornean orangutan Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus population estimate within and around Danau Sentarum National Park, Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 5, Issue 4, April 2023., 2023
Of the three sub‐species of Critically Endangered Bornean orangutans, Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus has the smallest population size. Our study found considerable decline of the populations, from 807 individuals in 1996 to 202 in 2010–2014 within the boundaries of Danau Sentarum National Park; and from 1578 to 71 in the outer boundaries of the Park.
