Changes in the Concentration of Trace Elements and Heavy Metals in El Chichón Crater Lake Active Volcano

open access: yes, 2020
The crater lake of El Chichón active volcano represents one of the most important extreme ecosystems in the world due to its high temperatures, low pH and the appearance of high concentrations of heavy metals because of volcanic activity.

Inter‐eruptive lahars at El Chichón Volcano (Mexico): Susceptibility analysis and numerical modelling

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms
El Chichón volcano, located in the southern part of Mexico, is one of the most active Mexican volcanoes. In 1982 it was the scene of the largest Plinian eruption recorded in Mexico during the last century. The volcano is in a climatic region with extreme

Sulfur Degassing From Steam‐Heated Crater Lakes: El Chichón (Chiapas, Mexico) and Víti (Iceland)

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
The composition of the gases released by El Chichón (Chiapas, Mexico) and Víti (Askja volcano, Iceland) volcanic lakes is examined by Multi‐GAS for the first time. Our results demonstrate that H2S and SO2 are degassed by these pH 2–3 lakes.

Petrologic characteristics of the 1982 and pre-1982 eruptive products of el Chichon Volcano, Chiapas, México

El Chichón volcanic activity before and after the Mw8.2, 2017, Chiapas earthquake, México. Is El Chichón ready to erupt?

open access: yesBulletin of Volcanology
El Chichón volcano is the most active volcano in the state of Chiapas, México, and experienced its last Plinian eruption (VEI = 5) in 1982. To better assess its volcanic hazard, we studied its readiness to erupt by estimating changes in its internal ...

Preliminary estimate of the radiative and climatic effects of the El Chichon eruption
