First Report of Vermamoeba vermiformis in the Island of El Hierro, Canary Islands, Spain

open access: yesNovelty in Biomedicine, 2016
Background: Free-living amoebae (FLA) are group of protozoa distributed worldwide in many habitats mainly water and soil related sources. Some members of FLA are able to act as opportunistic pathogens and are environmental carriers of other pathogenic ...

Abundance and Structure of the Zooplankton Community During a Post-eruptive Process: The Case of the Submarine Volcano Tagoro (El Hierro; Canary Islands), 2013-2018

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
The mesozooplankton community was analyzed over a 6-year period (2013-2018) during the post-eruptive stage of the submarine volcano Tagoro, located south of the island of El Hierro (Canary Archipelago, Spain).

Designing a Spatial Framework to Create Refugia‐Probability Maps for Conservation Planning: Applications in the Canary Islands

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Identifying climate refugia is a pressing priority for conservation planning under global change, particularly in oceanic archipelagos with high levels of endemicity and topographic complexity. Location Canary Islands. Methods Here, we developed a spatial framework to identify and recursively map refugia probability in the Canary Islands ...

Goodbye connections, hello Bagehot: democratization, lender of last resort independence and bank failures in Spain in 1931

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, Volume 79, Issue 1, Page 89-132, February 2026.

To answer these questions, this article provides new detailed archival evidence on the causes of bank failures in Spain in July 1931.

Generation and Maintenance of Diversity in an Island: A History of Fragmentation, Secondary Contact and Admixture

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim To gain detailed insights into how vertebrate intraspecific diversity can be generated and maintained within volcanic islands, using genomic data. Location The Canary Islands of Tenerife and La Palma. Time Period Tissue samples were obtained in 2003. Genomic analyses were performed in 2023–25. Taxon The endemic gecko, Tarentola delalandii.

Diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in wild rodents from the Canary Islands, Spain

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2020
Background Cryptosporidium spp. are worldwide protozoan parasites which include species that can lead to cryptosporidiosis in humans. Different animal species can serve as reservoirs and sources of dissemination of the disease, such as rodent species due

Patterns of Interploidy Admixture in Polyploid Complexes: Insights From Thymus Sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae)

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 3, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding gene flow between ploidy levels in polyploid complexes is essential for species delimitation and conservation. This study explores evolutionary dynamics in the polyploid complex Thymus sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae), comprising three taxa: T. mastichina subsp. mastichina, T. mastichina subsp.

Hydrothermal Activity at a Cretaceous Seamount, Canary Archipelago, Caused by Rejuvenated Volcanism

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Our knowledge of venting at intraplate seamounts is limited. Almost nothing is known about past hydrothermal activity at seamounts, because indicators are soon blanketed by sediment.
