The Atmosphere's Substantial Role in Interannual Variability of Earth's Energy Imbalance

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI) is a key metric to quantify climate change. While the ocean absorbs most excess heat, the atmosphere contributes only 1%–2% to the long‐term mean of EEI. However, our analysis of observational data demonstrates that variations in the atmosphere's energy content play a much larger role in interannual variations of

Weakening of Regional Hadley Circulation Delays Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall Onset

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract The timing of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) onset significantly influences agriculture, food security, livelihoods, and the Indian economy. While the drivers of climatological ISMR onset are well discussed, the causes of delayed ISMR onset remain unclear.

Trend of North African Dust Storms and Potential Link to Climate Change

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Over recent decades, North African dust storms have undergone marked variability, reflecting complex interactions between regional climate processes and environmental change. Using four decades (1984–2023) of visibility‐based observational records, we examine regional and seasonal trends in dust storm frequency across the Sahel and the Sahara,

Coupled authigenic Mg silicate and carbonate precipitation in saline lakes of the Salar de Atacama, Northern Chile

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 12, Issue 1, February 2026.
Sediments, unlithified and lithified microbial mats in the Salar de Atacama, are formed by similar pathways involving coupled precipitation of authigenic Mg silicate and calcium carbonate. Differences in products reflect differences in the initial distribution of organic biomass.

Demographic Models and Behavioral Assessments Uncover Distinct Species Histories in the Pseudocryptic Nudibranch Genus Hermissenda

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
We reconstructed the speciation history of the recently split pseudocryptic nudibranch genus Hermissenda, finding divergence times in the Pleistocene (1.29–0.55 mya). Demographic modeling and behavioral experiments show no gene flow and assortative mating between sympatric species H. crassicornis (s.s.) and H.
