ABSTRACT The South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) breeds in dense colonies along the Peruvian coast, mostly within protected areas managed by the Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SERNANP). To support responsible wildlife tourism near breeding sites, we evaluated the behavioral responses to controlled ...

Weak Tropical Tropospheric OH Response to Idealized ENSO
Abstract The hydroxyl radical (OH) is a key oxidant for methane. Previous studies suggest that OH exhibits interannual variability linked to the El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), but the sign, magnitude, and underlying mechanisms of this response remain uncertain.

Abstract The isotopic composition of precipitation reflects the combined influences of moisture sources, rainout history, and convective intensity, but the relative importance of these controls varies among regions and remains poorly understood in continental settings.

Abstract Accurate forecasting of the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is essential for improving regional climate resilience and managing water‐related risks. While most deep learning studies have focused on the Niño 3.4 region, the Niño 1+2 region, closely linked to extreme coastal warming associated with ENSO that impacts water infrastructure ...

ABSTRACT Annual tree‐ring oxygen‐isotope values were measured from sections of two fossil logs of Picea mariana (black spruce) recovered from last glacial maximum proglacial sediment in Illinois, USA. Collectively, the specimens date from ca. 25,130 to 24,720 cal years BP.

Distinct El Niño Flavors and SAM Variability Modulate Surface Melt Over the Ross Ice Shelf
Abstract Our study investigates how different flavors of El Niño, centered on the Eastern Pacific (EP) and Central Pacific (CP), and their interaction with the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) modulate surface melt events over the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS). Using satellite‐based melt observations, ERA5 reanalysis, high‐resolution regional model simulations, and ...

Drivers of 2023–2024 Atmospheric CO2 Growth: Role of Northern Mid‐to‐High Latitude Land Carbon Cycle
Abstract The global atmospheric CO2 growth rate in 2023–2024 reached an unprecedented level, exceeding all records since modern monitoring began. Using a CO2 flux inversion, constrained by column‐averaged CO2 observations from Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT), we investigated spatio‐temporal drivers of this anomaly.

Intensity dependence of El Niño and La Niña evolution and mixed‐layer heat‐budget processes
El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) intensity modulates the spatial, temporal, and dynamical evolution of events strongly. El Niño SST anomalies shift westward with decreasing intensity, while La Niña anomalies remain spatially fixed. Stronger events initiate earlier and persist longer than weak events.

Abstract The protective services provided by coastal foredunes vary spatially due to alongshore differences in dune morphology and hydrodynamic forcing. This study aims to quantify the drivers of alongshore variability of dune evolution across spatial (40‐km) and temporal (multi‐decadal) scales. The alongshore variability in dune evolution is extracted

Environmental Drivers of Jumbo Squid During Fishery Collapse in the Gulf of California (2019–2024)
ABSTRACT The jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) is a cephalopod endemic to the eastern Pacific with significant ecological and economic importance. Its exploitation in the Gulf of California (GC) peaked in the 1990s, with catches exceeding 100,000 tons, but collapsed in 2009 and virtually disappeared by 2015, largely due to environmental changes and ...
