Changes in El Niño characteristics and air–sea feedback mechanisms under progressive global warming

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2023
In this study, we investigate the potential changes of El Niño characteristics, including intensity, frequency and CP/EP El Niño ratio, under progressive global warming based on the 140-year CMIP6 model simulation outputs with the 1pctCO2 experiment ...

El Ninos: Their magnitudes and durations

open access: yesWorld Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews, 2023
Between 1900 and 2022, there have been 35 El Nino warming events recorded. An examination of the temperature rise caused by those events has shown that they occurred within the range of 0.029 – 0.54 Deg. C, with those of longer duration generally having the higher temperatures. Their median maximum temperature value was 0.29 Deg.

Signals of El Niño Modoki in the tropical tropopause layer and stratosphere [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2012
The effects of El Niño Modoki events on the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and on the stratosphere were investigated using European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) reanalysis data, oceanic El Niño indices, and general climate model ...

The North Equatorial Countercurrent East of the Dateline, Its Variations and Its Relationship to the El Niño Event

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
Using forty years (1978–2017) of Ocean Reanalysis System 4 (ORAS4) dataset, the purpose of this study is to investigate the fluctuation of the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) to the east of the dateline in relation to the presence of three kinds ...

A Diagnostic Study of the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode in El Nino and Non- El Nino Years [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IODM) is examined by comparing the characteristics of oceanic and atmospheric circulations, heat budgets, and possible mechanisms of IODM between El Nino and non-El Nino years.

Understanding Pacific Ocean influence on interannual precipitation variability in the Sahel

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
Moisture budget decomposition is performed for the Sahel (10°–20°N and 20°W–40°E) in order to understand the processes that govern regional hydroclimate variability on interannual time scales and frame them in the context of their primary ocean driver ...

Analysis of how the spatial and temporal patterns of fire and their bioclimatic and anthropogenic drivers vary across the Amazon rainforest in El Niño and non-El Niño years [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2021
In the past two decades, Amazon rainforest countries (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Venezuela) have experienced a substantial increase in fire frequency due to the changes in the patterns of different anthropogenic and climatic ...

Effects of the 2004 El Nino on Tropospheric Ozone and Water Vapor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The global effects of the 2004 El Nino on tropospheric ozone and H2O based on Aura OM1 and MLS measurements are analyzed. Although it was a weak El Nino from a historical perspective, it produced significant changes in these parameters in tropical ...
