Fossil freshwater fishes from the Pliocene of northern Colombia and the palaeogeography of northern South America

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
Abstract Freshwater fishes from the northwestern Colombian Andes are reported from the Pliocene Sincelejo and Ware formations. A total of 10 taxa have been identified, involving two orders, five families and nine genera. Characters from dental morphology, fin spines and cranial bones are provided as taxonomic tools for the study of fossil fishes.

New light on the trophic ecology of Carcharodon hastalis from teeth embedded in Miocene cetacean vertebrae from Calvert Cliffs in Maryland, USA

open access: yesActa Palaeontologica Polonica
Recent isotopic analyses of the teeth of the extinct lamnid Carcharodon hastalis showed that it fed at a comparable trophic level as was the fossil and modern great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias. Although there are many examples of shark bite marks

Occurrence of multiple congenital anomalies in Potamotrygon amandae (Elasmobranchii, Potamotrygoninae) embryos, including the first report of bicephaly

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 109, Issue 1, Page 257-263, July 2026.
Abstract Reports of teratogenic embryos in elasmobranchs have been documented in multiple species, with proposed aetiologies including environmental disturbances, genetic mutations, predation, exposure to endocrine‐disrupting compounds and maternal stress.

Standardized data to support conservation prioritization for sharks and batoids (Elasmobranchii)

open access: yesData in Brief, 2020
We collated and synthesized information on 1,226 Elasmobranch species (i.e., sharks, rays, and skates) globally from a wide range of sources. We obtained curated and standardized data from online databases, legal documents, press releases, and websites.

Danger on the plate: human health risks derived from the consumption of angular angelshark (Squatina guggenheim) meat in southeastern Brazil

open access: yesFrontiers in Toxicology
IntroductionShark and ray species are particularly vulnerable to pollutant bioaccumulation, including metals and metalloids, due to their k-strategist characteristics and mid–high trophic level.

Phylogeny of the Electric Rays of the Family Narcinidae (Gill, 1862): Systematic Review and Evidence of the Dispersal Routes to America

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The family Narcinidae has a cosmopolitan distribution; however, its systematic composition and phylogenetic position within Torpediniformes remain poorly understood. This study evaluates the evolutionary and biogeographic history of the family Narcinidae and investigates its distribution patterns using molecular systematics.

The current status of the Adriatic sea fish biodiversity

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2015
The marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea is nowadays facing substantial structural changes in flora and fauna. Such changes were observed in the Adriatic Sea as well.

Beyond mammals: the evolution of chewing and other forms of oropharyngeal food processing in vertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1406-1462, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...

One Assay to Rule Them All: Development of a Global Environmental DNA Tool to Support Range‐Wide Surveys of an Imperiled Sawfish and Its Application in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
To identify promising locations where Largetooth Sawfish, Pristis pristis, may persist, a novel species‐specific Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR) assay was designed capable of detecting a single copy of DNA, with in silico and in vitro validation experiments indicating functionality across the species' historical range.
