Evidence for a fisher‐designed solution to manta and devil ray bycatch in tuna fisheries

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Bycatch in global tropical tuna purse seine fisheries represents a significant source of mortality for manta and devil rays (mobulids), which are globally threatened. Use of best handling and rapid release practices on purse seine vessels can substantially reduce mortality and improve vulnerability status for mobulids.

Redistribution of Cetaceans Based on Ocean Temperature Using Spatiotemporal Regression Models

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim A warming climate is predicted to drive shifts in marine species' distribution. Determining the environmental variables influencing the distribution and habitat use of large predators, such as cetaceans, is critical for conservation management, yet remains poorly understood.

Emerging patterns of species richness, diversity, population density, and distribution in the skates (Rajidae) of Alaska [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Six years of bottom-trawl survey data, including over 6000 trawls covering over 200 km2 of bottom area throughout Alaska’s subarctic marine waters, were analyzed for patterns in species richness, diversity, density, and distribution of skates. The Bering

Anchoring from shipping as a disturbance agent to temperate rocky reef fish: marked shifts observed in trophic and taxonomic guilds

open access: yesFrontiers in Conservation Science
Anchoring impacts to marine environments from large, ocean-going ships is increasingly recognized as a global threat to marine biota. To date, no replicated assessment examining anchor disturbance to fish assemblages exists at the scale of ocean-going ...

Protection from illegal fishing and shark recovery restructures mesopredatory fish communities on a coral reef

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
The recovery of communities of predatory fishes within a no‐take marine reserve after the eradication of illegal fishing provides an opportunity to examine the role of sharks and other large‐bodied mesopredatory fishes in structuring reef fish ...
