On the buckling of elastic rings by external confinement [PDF]
We report the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the buckling of thin elastic rings confined within containers of circular or regular polygonal cross section. The rings float on the surface of water held in the container and controlled removal of the fluid increases the confinement of the ring.

Influence of flanged-cutout on the buckling behaviors of square plate under uniaxial compression
Cutouts are commonly found in aerospace, ships, and marine structures, which have a great influence on mechanical properties such as stress concentration, natural frequency, and structural load-bearing performance of the structure.

On the buckling of elastic plates [PDF]
The Foppl-von Karman equations are used to explore the onset of linear instability and the subsequent nonlinear development of buckling patterns in a flat elastic plate due to an imposed shear or body force such as gravity. Experimental results are also presented for a clamped and sheared sheet of Neoprene rubber and these compare favourably with ...

Study of the Elastic and Inelastic Resistance to Lateral Torsional Buckling of Steel Semi-Compact I-Sections [PDF]
This paper uses a parametric numerical study to assess the Lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) performance of several semi-compact beams: S1, S2, and S3.

Buckling of a nonlinear elastic rod
AbstractThe buckling of a pin-ended slender rod subjected to a horizontal end load is formulated as a nonlinear boundary value problem. The rod material is taken to be governed by constitutive laws which are nonlinear with respect to both bending and compression. The nonlinear boundary value problem is converted to a suitable integral equation to allow

The buckling of rotationally restrained microbars embedded in an elastic matrix is studied within the framework of strain gradient elasticity theory. The elastic matrix is modeled in this study as Winkler’s one-parameter elastic matrix.

Elastic and elasto-plastic buckling analysis of perforated steel plates
Many steel structures such as ships and offshore structures are composed by welded stiffened or unstiffened plate elements. Cutouts are often provided in these plate elements for inspection, maintenance, and service purposes, and the size of these holes ...
