Coupled modes of elastic buckling

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1967
Abstract I t is shown that when the critical loads corresponding to the modes of buckling of a two-degrees-of-freedom system are equal, or nearly so, then elastic post-buckling involves coupling between the modes. The forms taken by these coupled modes are discussed for the general case and for special cases of symmetry; the forms are illustrated by

Switching graphitic polytypes in elastically coupled cavities

Nature Nanotechnology
Graphitic polytypes-commensurate stacking variants of graphene layers-exhibit pronounced stacking-dependent properties, including intrinsic polarization, orbital magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Previous attempts to switch between these polytypes required micrometre-scale domains and micronewton loading forces, severely limiting ...

Linear Elasticity with Couple Stresses

2010
The linear couple-stress theory of Mindlin and Tiersten is reformulated allowing also for dislocations and disclinations. The governing equations are compiled in form of a Tonti diagram.
