Motivated by the problem of finding an explicit description of a developable narrow Moebius strip of minimal bending energy, which was first formulated by M. Sadowsky in 1930, we will develop the theory of elastic strips. Recently E.L.

Dynamic deformation characteristics of unsaturated silt over a wide suction range
By using a suction-controllable dynamic triaxial testing apparatus, a series of dynamic deformation tests are carried out on a unsaturated silt subjected to wide suctions imposed by the axial translation technique and vapor equilibrium method with ...

Characteristics of energy evolution during total stress-strain in rocks under uniaxial compression
To study the energy evolution of rocks under uniaxial compression, uniaxial compression and uniaxial step loading and unloading tests were performed on granite, sandstone, and coal, and the stress-strain curves under different conditions were obtained ...

Fractal pattern formation at elastic-plastic transition in heterogeneous materials [PDF]
Fractal patterns are observed in computational mechanics of elastic-plastic transitions in two models of linear elastic/perfectly-plastic random heterogeneous materials: (1) a composite made of locally isotropic grains with weak random fluctuations in ...

The design space of plane elastic curves
Elastic bending of initially flat slender elements allows the realization and economic fabrication of intriguing curved shapes. In this work, we derive an intuitive but rigorous geometric characterization of the design space of plane elastic rods with variable stiffness.

Elastic visco-plastic model for soft clay based on isochronous curves
The deformation of soft clay is closely related to the time, including both consolidation effect and creep effect, between which the interaction determines the settlement and long-term settlement of soft soils.

How a Curved Elastic Strip Opens [PDF]
An elastic strip is transversely clamped in a curved frame. The induced curvature decreases as the strip opens and connects to its flat natural shape. Various ribbon profiles are measured and the scaling law for the opening length validates a description where the in-plane stretching gradually relaxes the bending stress.
