On the stability of elastic curved bars [PDF]

open access: possibleActa Mechanica Sinica, 1987
A general discussion about the stability of arbitrary elastic curved bars in space under combined actions of bending and twisting is given in this paper. A system of Eqs. (28)–(36) for perturbation functions near some equilibrium state is presented. With appropriate boundary conditions, the nontrivial solution corresponds to the critical state.

Elastic Stability of Curved Members

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1983
A general solution method of a system of coupled differential equations governing the elastic buckling of thin-walled curved members is presented. The finite element displacement method is formulated based on a variational principle. The stiffness and stability properties of the finite elements are consistent and are obtained within the bounds of ...

The elastic stability of curved beams

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1967
Abstract Calculations are made of the ranges of validity of three theories used for investigating the instability of curved beams. These include linear and nonlinear (elastica) extensible theories, as well as a nonlinear inextensible one. The specific example chosen for the investigation is that of a curved beam hinged to fixed supports at its ends ...

On Shape of Plane Elastic Curves

International Journal of Computer Vision, 2006
We study shapes of planar arcs and closed contours modeled on elastic curves obtained by bending, stretching or compressing line segments non-uniformly along their extensions. Shapes are represented as elements of a quotient space of curves obtained by identifying those that differ by shape-preserving transformations.

Impedance curves for an elastic pile

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 1989
An extensive parametric study is conducted to investigate the impedance characteristics of a single elastic pile embedded in an elastic soil medium. A recently developed semi-analytical model based on Green's functions for a system of buried harmonic loading configurations is used in this study.

Elastic-Plastic R-Curves

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1978
The principal purpose of this investigation was to study specimen size effects on elastic-plastic type R-curve using HY130 steel plate. Compact specimens ranging in size from 12T to 1T in planar dimensions and standardized on 1-inch thickness were used.

Unfolding a Curved Elastic Sheet

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 1981
A curved elastic sheet is flattened on a rigid flat plate by vertical end forces. The problem is governed by a non-dimensional parameter, B, which signifies the relative importance of flexural rigidity to the applied force and the natural radius.

Elastic equilibrium of curved thin films

Physical Review E, 1994
We present a unified theory of the bending of crystalline films that accounts for both elastic effects and crystal defects. Our theory predicts a transition from a bent coherent film with no dislocations to an incoherent, dislocated one as the film thickness or curvature is increased.

The Elasticity of Substitution and the Shape of the Transformation Curve

Economica, 1973
The purpose of this paper is to determine, for a country producing two goods with two factors, how the shape of the transformation curve depends on the elasticities of substitution in production in the two industries. Harry Johnson' has examined the shape of the transformation curve and has concluded that it is much less bowed out than is traditionally

Elastic curves and the Delaunay problem for curves with constant torsion

Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo, 2001
In this paper we investigate the critical points of the Delaunay functional for curves with constant torsion. We give an explicit description of the extrema in terms of Jacobi's elliptic functions.
