Comparison of elastic configurations for energy efficient legged locomotion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Energy efficient locomotion with the amazing agility of humans and other animals remains a challenge for legged robots. Many existing joint mechanisms for legged robots use a serial configuration which gives compliance, however this may be sub-optimal ...

Design and Analysis of Compression–Torsion Coupling Metamaterials Using the Golden Section Method

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel compression–torsion metamaterial is engineered using inclined rods and symmetry breaking. To optimize its torsional performance, the golden section method is employed. The mechanical response of the metamaterial is validated through both numerical analysis and experimental validation.

An obstacle problem for the p-elastic energy

open access: yesCalculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations
AbstractIn this paper we consider an obstacle problem for a generalization of the p-elastic energy among graphical curves with fixed ends. Taking into account that the Euler–Lagrange equation has a degeneracy, we address the question whether solutions have a flat part, i.e. an open interval where the curvature vanishes. We also investigate which is the

Influence of Scan Strategies in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion on Solidification, Microstructure, and High‐Temperature Compressive Properties of γ′‐Strengthened Inconel 738LC

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Experiments and thermophysical simulations were conducted to investigate the electron beam powder bed fusion electron beam (PBF‐EB/M) process for the γ′‐strengthened nickel‐based superalloy Inconel 738LC. The results demonstrate the impact of process‐induced microstructural variations on high‐temperature mechanical behavior, providing a basis for ...

High temperature elastic anisotropy of the perovskite and post-perovskite polymorphs of Al2O3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Finite temperature ab initio molecular dynamics calculations were performed to determine the high temperature elastic and seismic properties of the perovskite and post-perovskite phases of pure end-member Al2O3.

New AI‐Assisted Approach for Expanding the Solution Space: Application to Lattice Structure Design

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces an innovative framework for designing structured materials by ex panding the design space through reparameterization of qualitative variables into continuous structural descriptors. Combined with machine‐learning‐based prediction and multi‐objective optimization, the approach enables the discovery of novel lattice architectures ...

Development of a micromechanical model in interaction with parameters related to the microstructure of carbon/epoxy composites. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Gaseous Hydrogen storage under high pressure for autonomous energy application leads to non-metallic solutions for the material of vessels. The choice of wound carbon / epoxy composites was adopted for the design of storage tanks under high pressure.

Energy-based indicators and optimization of coal pillar width in gob-side entry driving

open access: yesScientific Reports
Gob-side entry driving is widely applied in deep coal mines, where rapid unloading of surrounding rock on the gob side induces stress redistribution, and the coal pillar is consequently regarded as a key load-bearing structure.

Additive Manufacturing of Alumina‐Reinforced Elastomers

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Vat‐photopolymerized elastomers reinforced with platelet‐shaped alumina exhibited preferential orientation, reduced porosity, and significantly enhanced mechanical performance. A 3 wt% platelet loading increased tensile strength from 12.4 to 45.7 MPa, highlighting the critical role of filler morphology in elastomeric VPP composites.
