Weak elastic energy of irregular curves
A weak notion of elastic energy for (not necessarily regular) rectifiable curves in any space dimension is proposed. Ourp-energy is defined through a relaxation process, where a suitablep-rotation of inscribed polygons is adopted. The discretep-rotation we choose has a geometric flavour: a polygon is viewed as an approximation to a smooth curve, and ...

A numerical–experimental framework is developed for characterizing multi‐matrix fiber‐reinforced polymers (MM‐FRPs) combining epoxy and polyurethane matrices. Harmonic bending tests are integrated with finite element model updating (FEMU) to simultaneously identify elastic and viscoelastic material parameters.

Energy Radiation from a Multi-Story Building [PDF]
Damping limits the resonance of vibrating systems and thus higher anelastic damping is generally favored for engineered structures subjected to earthquake motions, because it means that a structure can dissipate a larger percentage of its energy per ...

Elastic Bending Energy: A Variational Approach [PDF]
Geometric continuum models for fluid lipid membranes are considered using classical field theory, within a covariant variational approach. The approach is cast as a higher-derivative Lagrangian formulation of continuum classical field theory, and it can be seen as a covariant version of the field theoretical variational approach that uses the height ...

Empirical analysis of the spot market implications of price-elastic demand [PDF]
Regardless of the form of restructuring, deregulated electricity industries share one common feature: the absence of any significant, rapid demand-side response to the wholesale (or, spot market) price.

Bifurcations in the regularized Ericksen bar model
We consider the regularized Ericksen model of an elastic bar on an elastic foundation on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions as a two-parameter bifurcation problem.

Modeling and computation of two phase geometric biomembranes using surface finite elements [PDF]
Biomembranes consisting of multiple lipids may involve phase separation phenomena leading to coexisting domains of different lipid compositions.

Evaluating Energy Absorption Performance of Filled Lattice Structures
Maximum stress must be considered to robustly evaluate energy absorber designs. This approach was applied to compare all types of absorbers in a single Ashby diagram and determine the utility of filling lattice voids with a second material. High‐performance fillers can improve the performance of lattices that are limited by buckling or catastrophic ...
