Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Systematic numerical investigation of the role of hierarchy in heterogeneous bio-inspired materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
It is well known that hierarchical structure is an important feature in biological materials to optimise various properties, including mechanical ones. It is however still unclear how these hierarchical architectures can improve material characteristics,

Numerical investigation on the elastic modulus of rubber-like materials by a rigid ball indentation technique

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
The indentation technique has been practically proven to be useful in determining mechanical properties of materials, such as hardness and elastic modulus for rubber-like materials (elastomers).

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

Microprocessor-based elastic feed systems for sewing applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The manufacture of certain garments, such as underwear and T-shirts, requires the attachment of tensioned elastics and tapes to workpieces which make up the garment.

Impedance measurements for determination of elastic and piezoelectric coefficients of films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Most of those techniques used for the measurement of elastic coefficients for bulk piezoelectric ceramics are not applicable to films deposited on thick substrates because the measured properties, such as the resonant frequency, are usually dominated ...

The use of a vickers indenter in depth sensing indentation for measuring elastic modulus and vickers hardness

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2004
Depth sensing indentation is a powerful experimental technique for determining mechanical properties of materials. In this work a computational routine was developed based on Oliver-Pharr method for measuring a more precise values of elastic modulus ...

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...
