A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Elastic and elastic-plastic analysis of multilayer thin films filled with heterogeneous materials

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2018
Due to the mismatch between the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of two adjacent films, the residual stress was growing up during thermal cycling.

Bayesian Estimation Improves Prediction of Outcomes After Epilepsy Surgery

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We estimated the statistical power of studies predicting seizure freedom after epilepsy surgery. We extracted data from a Cochrane meta‐analysis. The median power across all studies was 14%. Studies with a median sample size or less (n ≤ 56) and a statistically significant result exaggerated the true effect size by a factor of 5.4, while the ...

Determination of elastic moduli of elastic–plastic microspherical materials using nanoindentation simulation without mechanical polishing

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2021
When using the Oliver–Pharr method, the indented specimen is assumed to be a perfectly flat surface, thus ignoring the influences of surface roughness that might be encountered in experiment. For nanoindentation measurements, a flat surface is fabricated

Assessment of Skin in Patients With Systemic Sclerosis Using High‐Frequency Ultrasound and Shear Wave Elastography: A Comparative Study With Histology, Molecular, and Clinical Parameters

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Ultrasound (US) has been proposed as a potential tool for assessing skin fibrosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc). However, a large‐scale comparison of US‐based assessment with histologic markers of skin fibrosis has not been reported. We evaluated US‐based skin assessments for their face validity (differentiation between involved SSc and healthy

Numerical Investigation on Effective Elastic Modulus of Multifractal Porous Materials

open access: yesFractal and Fractional, 2022
The design of a novel material necessitates a fundamental understanding of its structure–property relation. Inorganic porous materials (media) such as natural soil and rock, and artificial ceramic and cement, exhibit multifractal characteristics in view ...

Elastic interactions of active cells with soft materials

open access: yes, 2003
Anchorage-dependent cells collect information on the mechanical properties of the environment through their contractile machineries and use this information to position and orient themselves.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Planar structured materials with extreme elastic anisotropy

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Designing anisotropic structured materials by reducing symmetry results in unique behaviors, such as shearing under uniaxial compression. While rank-deficient materials such as hierarchical laminates have been shown to exhibit extreme elastic anisotropy,
