The elastic modulus for maize stems [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Methods, 2018
Stalk lodging is a serious challenge in the production of maize and sorghum. A comprehensive understanding of lodging will likely require accurate characterizations of the mechanical properties of such plants. One of the most important mechanical properties for structural analysis of bending is the modulus of elasticity.

Elastic Modulus of Polypyrrole Nanotubes [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2000
The first measurements of the tensile elastic modulus of polypyrrole nanotubes are presented. The nanotubes were mechanically tested in three points bending using atomic force microscopy. The elastic tensile modulus was deduced from force-curve measurements on different nanotubes with outer diameter ranging between 35 and 160 nm.

Elastic modulus of halloysite nanotubes [PDF]

open access: yesNanotechnology, 2013
This work reports measurements of the elastic modulus of halloysite nanotubes. Nanoscale three-point bending tests were performed on individual nanotubes using an atomic force microscope. Nanotubes exhibit elastic behaviour at small deformations. The stiffness of the tubes, and hence their elastic modulus, was deduced from force curve measurements ...

The elastic modulus of isolated polytetrafluoroethylene filaments [PDF]

open access: yesScienceOpen Research, 2014
Abstract We report vibrational Raman spectra of small extended perfluoro-n-alkanes (C n F2n+2 with n = 6, 8–10, 12–14) isolated in supersonic jet expansions and use wavenumbers of longitudinal acoustic vibrations to extrapolate the elastic modulus of cold, isolated polytetrafluoroethylene filaments.

Elastic bending modulus of monolayer graphene [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2009
A new formula for elastic bending modulus of monolayer graphene is derived analytically from an empirical potential for solid-state carbon-carbon bonds. Two physical origins are identified for the non-vanishing bending modulus of the atomically thin graphene sheet, one due to the bond angle effect and the other resulting from the bond order term ...

Elastic modulus of viral nanotubes

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2008
We report an experimental and theoretical study of the radial elasticity of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) nanotubes. An atomic force microscope tip is used to apply small radial indentations to deform TMV nanotubes. The initial elastic response of TMV nanotubes can be described by finite-element analysis in 5nm indentation depths and Hertz theory in 1.5nm

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...

Matrigel inhibits elongation and drives endoderm differentiation in aggregates of mouse embryonic stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Stem cell‐based embryo models (SCBEMs) are valuable to study early developmental milestones. Matrigel, a basement membrane matrix, is a critical substrate used in various SCBEM protocols, but its role in driving stem cell lineage commitment is not clearly defined.
