Elastic properties of nanowires [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Physics, 2006
We present a model to study Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the composite material of amorphous nanowires. It is an extension of the model derived by two of us [da Fonseca and Galvão, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 175502 (2004)] to study the elastic properties of amorphous nanosprings. The model is based on twisting and tensioning a straight nanowire and

Elastic Properties of Viruses [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2007
Viruses are compact biological nanoparticles whose elastic and dynamical properties are hardly known. Inelastic (Brillouin) light scattering was used to characterize these properties, from microcrystals of the Satellite Tobacco Mosaic Virus, a nearly spherical plant virus of 17-nm diameter. Longitudinal sound velocities in wet and dry Satellite Tobacco

Elastic properties of terbium [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review B, 1996
The temperature dependence of the Young modulus along the crystallographic axes b and c (E(b) and E(c)), and the internal friction of a terbium single crystal have been measured. At 4.2 K, E(b) and E(c) are equal to 38 and 84.5 GPa, respectively. The lattice part of the Young modulus and the Debye temperature has been calculated.

Elastic Properties Of Shales [PDF]

open access: yesDrilling and Rock Mechanics Symposium, 1963
Abstract In recent years, results of several investigations of the effects of stress environment on physical properties of sandstones, limestones, and granites have been published. Few data, however, are available on the elastic properties of shale.

PROPERTIES OF THE ANISOTROPIC ELASTICITY TENSOR [PDF]

open access: yesThe Quarterly Journal of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, 1989
Summary: A unified presentation of some properties of the fourth-rank tensor of anisotropic elasticity is given. The unified presentation involves both established concepts such as the Cauchy relations, the Voigt and Reuss bounds, planes of symmetry and specific directions of longitudinal wave propagation, and a new concept, the specific axis for pure ...

Characterizing the elastic properties of tissues

open access: yesMaterials Today, 2011
The quality of life of ageing populations is increasingly determined by age-related changes to the mechanical properties of numerous biological tissues. Degradation and mechanical failure of these tissues has a profound effect on human morbidity and mortality.
