Elastic Properties of Glasses

Physical Review Letters, 1985
It is believed that covalent glasses can be divided into two classes: those with high average coordination (amorphous solids) and those with low average coordination (polymeric glasses). We present the first conclusive evidence that this division is correct by calculating the elastic properties of random networks with different average coordination $〈r〉

Elastic Properties of Ice

2001
This chapter contains information on the elastic properties of the various H(2)O ice types that have been studies to date. The ice types include high-pressure/low-temperature polymorphs, deuterated ice, clathrate hydrates, and sea ice. The studies are summarized and the methods of investigation discussed.

Elastic properties of the forisome

Functional Plant Biology, 2007
Forisomes are elongate Ca2+-responsive contractile protein bodies and act as flow blocking gates within the phloem of legumes. Because an understanding of their mechanical properties in vitro underpins understanding of their physiology in vivo, we undertook, using a microcantilever method, microscopic tensile tests (incremental stress-relaxation ...

Elastic Properties of Polymer Networks

Journal of Molecular Modeling, 1996
Many fundamental questions for the understanding of polymer melts and networks are more suitably addressed by current computer simulations than by experiments. The reason is that simulations have simultaneous access to the microscopic structure and the macroscopic behavior of well-defined model systems.

Elastic Properties

1983
AbstractMany scientific-technological advances depend critically on solid-state elastic properties, their magnitudes, and their responses to variables like stress and temperature. This chapter provides the definitions and descriptions of elastic constants and emphasizes five aspects of engineering-material solid-state elastic constants: general ...

Anisotropic elastic properties of microtubules

The European Physical Journal E, 2005
We review and model the experimental parameters which characterize elastic properties of microtubules. Three macroscopic estimates are made of the anisotropic elastic moduli, accounting for the molecular forces between tubulin dimers: for a longitudinal compression of a microtubule, for a lateral force and for a shearing force.

Elastic properties of solid helium

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2009
Following recent torsional oscillator measurements which appear to show the 'non-classical rotational inertia' which characterizes a supersolid, a number of experiments have searched for evidence of unusual behavior in other properties. We have developed a new technique for measuring the shear modulus of solid helium at low frequencies and small ...

Elastic properties of colloidal crystals

Physical Review B, 1992
The shear modulus of colloidal dispersions was calculated by assuming the purely repulsive Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) potential and the Sogami potential containing a short-range repulsion and long-range attraction. These two potentials gave practically the same shear moduli, which were in a good agreement with the observed values.
