The Elastic Properties of a Human Mandible

This paper is a report on a study of the elastic properties of the human mandible. Using a continuous-wave ultrasound technique, we determined the elastic constants of ten small specimens taken from various locations within a single mandible. Seven of the nine independent orthotropic elastic constants were determined for each specimen.

Anisotropic elastic properties of microtubules

We review and model the experimental parameters which characterize elastic properties of microtubules. Three macroscopic estimates are made of the anisotropic elastic moduli, accounting for the molecular forces between tubulin dimers: for a longitudinal compression of a microtubule, for a lateral force and for a shearing force.

Visco-elastic properties of the lens

The dynamic visco-elastic properties of human, monkey and rabbit lenses have been measured with a dynamic rheometer. The value for the apparent elastic modulus (Young modulus) of the lens was found to be 10 5 –10 6 dyne/cm 2 in humans and 10 4 –10 5 dyne/cm 2 in monkeys and rabbits. Abstract The elastic constants and compressibility of manganese fluoride have been measured between 4·2°K and 300°K. Analysis of these data give a Debye temperature (elastic) of 214°K ± 2°K. The compressibility data indicates that the magnetic ordering effects the compressibility at least 100°K above the Neel temperature.
