Seismic Bearing Capacity and Elastic Settlement of Footing on Slopes

2021
The aim of this paper to study the seismic bearing capacity of embedded strip footing on cohesionless soil slopes. In addition, elastic settlement of strip footing on slopes is also examined, which is not yet studied in the literature. Three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM)-based numerical analysis in PLAXIS 3D software is carried out for the

Closure to “Settlement of Strip Load on Elastic-Plastic Soil”

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1969
THE WRITERS AGREE WITH HANSEN THAT THEIR RESULTS DO AGREE MORE WITH PRANDTL'S SOLUTION THAN WITH HILL'S. THE PURPOSE IN MENTIONING HILL'S WAS TO POINT OUT THAT THE LIMIT SOLUTION IS UNIQUE ONLY WITH RESPECT TO LOADS AT FAILURE, AND NOT WITH RESPECT TO THE EXACT MODE OF FAILURE. THE DISCRETIZATION INVOLVED IN ANY FINITE NUMERICAL PROCEDURE CAN CERTAINLY

Elastic settlement of square footings on a two-layer deposit

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering, 2010
Two charts for elastic (immediate) settlement at the centerline of a flexible square footing on Burmister two-layer elastic system are presented in this paper. The charts are developed for different values of the modular ratio E1/E2 [where E1 refers to the modulus of elasticity of the first (top) layer and E2 corresponds to the second (bottom) layer ...

Discussion of “Settlement of Strip Load on Elastic-Plastic Soil”

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1969
THE AUTHORS SHOW THAT THE STUDY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELASTIC-PLASTIC STATES OF STRESS AND STRAIN THROUGH A GIVEN TEST FROM ZERO TO FAILURE LOADING MAY GIVE ANSWERS TO SOME IMPORTANT PROBLEMS IN SOIL MECHANICS. MR. HANSEN STATES THAT THE PAPER SHOWS THAT EVEN WITH THE SIMPLEST POSSIBLE ASSUMPTIONS OF PERFECT ELASTIC-PLASTIC MATERIALS, THE SOLUTIONS ...

Prediction of elastic settlement of rectangular raft foundation — a coupled FE–BE approach

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1999
Summary: We propose a numerical method for computation of elastic settlement of raft foundations using a FE-BE coupling technique. The structural model adopted for the raft is based on an isoparametric plate bending finite element, and the raft-soil interface is idealized by boundary elements.

General model for the approximate calculation of elastic-bed settlements

Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, 1995
A model for the approximate calculation of elastic beds, which is based on the concept of pressure-distribution angle, is proposed. The model can be used for an elastic half plane, half space, and a layer of finite thickness. In the latter case, the computational scheme reduces to a Winkler model, if the distribution angle is a right angle.

Elastic settlement and rotation of rectangular footings on nonhomogeneous soil

Géotechnique, 1998
Simple algebraic formulae are presented for estimating elastic settlement or rotation of rectangular footings on non-homogeneous soil. Although these formulae have been derived from the solution for perfect rigid footings, they would yield sufficiently accurate estimates of the average displacement and rotation of flexible footings.
