Odd elasticity

Nature Physics, 2019
A passive solid cannot do work on its surroundings through any quasistatic cycle of deformations. This property places strong constraints on the allowed elastic moduli.

Elastic wavefield tomography with physical model constraints

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2015, 2015
Data-domain elastic wavefield tomography is an effective method for updating multiparameter elastic models that exploits much of the information provided by observed multicomponent data. However, poor illumination of the subsurface by P- and S-waves often prevents reliable updates of the model parameters.

Micromechanics: Elastic, Thermal, and Physical Properties

1993
In this chapter, we examine the elastic and physical properties of ceramic matrix composites. In particular, we give a micromechanical description of the different elastic constants, thermal expansion coefficients, thermal conductivity, density, etc.

Basic Physical Processes of Elastic Spectrometry

1996
Forward recoil scattering can be completely described using the very well-known basic principles of charged particle interaction with matter, but charged particles moving through matter interact with both electron shells of atoms and nuclei. Thus, beside the scattering of ions by target nuclei, we have to consider energy loss resulting from ionizations

Introduction to Physical Properties and Elasticity Models

2003
Estimating the in situ methane hydrate volume from seismic surveys requires knowledge of the rock physics relations between wave speeds and elastic moduli in hydrate/sediment mixtures. The elastic moduli of hydrate/sediment mixtures depend on the elastic properties of the individual sedimentary particles and the manner in which they are arranged.

A physical basis for red cell membrane elasticity

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1976
Abstract An estimate is made of the effect of lipid-water interactions at the membrane surface on observed membrane elasticity in the red blood cell. It is shown that elastic effects are expected to result from these interactions even in a completely fluid membrane.

The Mechanics and Physics of Adhesion of Elastic Solids

1981
Abstract The paper discusses a number of important questions raised in the theory of adhesion between elastic bodies under the action of normal forces. the relation between the microscopic quantities such as the interaction energies of attractive and repulsive forces, the equilibrium separations of atoms and the macroscopic quantities used in the ...

A solution to an infinite elastic continuum penetrated by an elastic tube with different physical properties

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 1977
Abstract An exact analytical solution has been obtained, by means of the complex stress-function method, to the problem of a homogeneous isotropic infinite elastic continuum subjected to a general biaxial stress field and containing a hole reinforced by a ‘thick’ elastic prismatic tube, also homogeneous and isotropic, which has different elastic ...

The Physical Basis of Elasticity of Solid Quasicrystals

2016
The physical background on elasticity of solid quasicrystals is quite different from that of the crystal elasticity or classical elasticity; the discussion about this provides a basis of the subsequent contents of the book.
