Elastic theory of biomembranes
Thin Solid Films, 2001This paper reports on some progress of vesicle shape study in the Helfrich curvature elasticity theory of fluid membranes which was recently extended to the complex structures of smectic liquid crystals. A general differential equation of surface is presented, which is the Euler-Lagrange equation for the variation problem delta phi Phi dA =0.

A problem in elasticity theory
Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1990Abstract The problem of determining the dimensions of the transverse cross-sections of a beam from the given frequencies of its natural vibrations is examined. Frequency spectra are indicated that determine the dimenions of the transverse cross-sections of the beam uniquely, an effective procedure is presented for solving the inverse problem, and a ...

Elasticities and the Interest Parity Theory
Journal of Political Economy, 1973In a recent article in this Journal, M. F. J. Prachowny (1970) offers a revised specification of the interest parity condition; he introduces a spread between borrowing and lending interest rates and assumes an upward-sloping supply of funds. These assumptions imply the existence of a neutral band around the traditional interest parity line-in which no

An Introduction to the Theory of Elasticity
Nature, 1936A CONSIDERABLE gap exists between the preparation in engineering mechanics which is usually given in engineering schools and the preparation required to read such fundamental books as A. E. H. Love's “Mathematical Theory of Elasticity” or Lord Rayleigh's “Theory of Sound”. Owing to this gap, new developments in the theoretical sciences are very slow to

When a material is stressed, there is a possibility for it to fail. Sometimes it fails without giving any indication and sometimes the failure is delayed. The analysis of failure of materials helps to know the actual reasons of their failure. There are five theories relating to a material’s failure, but none of them give the exact reason of failure ...
