Multiferroic and related hysteretic behavior in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys [PDF]
We combine a Ginzburg–Landau model for a ferroelastic transition with the theory of micromagnetism to study the magnetostructural behavior leading to multicaloric effects in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys.

Frustrated magnetism and caloric effects in Mn-based antiperovskite Nitrides : Ab Initio theory [PDF]
We model changes of magnetic ordering in Mn-antiperovskite nitrides driven by biaxial lattice strain at zero and at finite temperature. We employ a non-collinear spin-polarised density functional theory to compare the response of the geometrically ...

Elastocaloric switching effect induced by reentrant martensitic transformation [PDF]
Vapor compression technologies widely used for refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning have consumed a large fraction of global energy. Efforts have been made to improve the efficiency to save the energy, and to search for new refrigerants to take the place of the ones with high global warming potentials.

Metallic Bond Induces Soft Phonon Mode and Anharmonicity in Heusler Alloy. [PDF]
The fruitful functional performances of metastable Heusler alloys originate from the martensitic transformation driven by the transverse acoustic soft phonon mode, regulated by anharmonicity. This study reveals that the long‐range interaction rooted in metallic bonding between spin‐down d‐orbitals of Ni─Ni induces phonon softening and significant ...

Impact of Controlled Magneto-Structural Coupling in MnCoGe-Based Compounds on the Design of Multifunctional Materials for Technological Advances. [PDF]
In this work, the authors systematically investigate how Ni substitution regulates the magneto‐structural coupling and their functional consequences in the MnCoGe‐based compounds. Geometric nonlinear theory analysis reveals that Ni modification change of magneto‐structural transition can alleviate the lattice incompatibility, thereby broadening the ...

Temperature contour maps at the strain-induced martensitic transition of a Cu–Zn–Al shape-memory single crystal [PDF]
We study temperature changes at the reverse strain-induced martensitic transformation in a Cu–Zn–Al single crystal. Infrared thermal imaging reveals a markedly inhomogeneous temperature distribution.

Ultrahigh cyclability of a large elastocaloric effect in multiferroic phase-transforming materials
Multiferroic phase-transforming alloys demonstrate intriguing multicaloric effects, but they are intrinsically brittle and their elastocaloric effect shows poor cyclability, which remains a major challenge for exploiting more efficient multicaloric ...

Colossal magnetocaloric effect in magneto-auxetic systems [PDF]
We show that a mechanically driven magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in magneto-auxetic systems (MASs) in the vicinity of room temperature is possible and the effect can be colossal.

In this work, we have studied the elastocaloric effect in directionally solidified Co51.6V31.4Ga17 alloys with a strong [001] preferred orientation. The entropy change for thermal-induced martensitic transformation is determined as 19.6 J kg−1 K−1.
