Acromegaly in the elderly patients
Endocrine, 2020Acromegaly is a rare disease characterized by a chronic exposition to growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), caused in most cases by a pituitary GH-secreting adenoma. Chronic GH excess induces systemic complications (metabolic, cardiovascular, respiratory, neoplastic, and musculoskeletal) and increased mortality if not ...

Elderly patients' age affects various bio-psycho-social parameters of their diseases. A patient's old age itself often evokes a multiform recoil in dentists, directly opposite to the required therapeutic attitude. The essential principle in gerodontics is dentist-patient cooperation, attainable only if the latter is approached in a holistic and ...

In an imperfect world preoccupied with the mechanics of selfimmolation and the intransigence of youthpower, an increase in longevity would not seem to be a particularly desirable benefit of progress in medical and social science. The senior citizen, as the aged person is called in an even more euphemistically termed civilized society, is becoming a ...

The geriatric population is the fastest growing age group today, and geriatric trauma accounts for a significant proportion of admissions to trauma centers. Due to functional changes with age, preexisting diseases, and pre-injury medications, geriatric trauma patients have limited physiological reserves and, therefore, require much more aggressive ...

The Care of Elderly Patients by Elderly Physicians
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 1987To examine the content of care that elderly patients receive from physicians 5.65 years of age, data from the 1981 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey were analyzed. Compared to physicians aged 35 to 54 years, elderly physicians devoted a larger proportion of their practices to the care of elderly patients.

We outline general principles concerning the clinical presentation of rheumatological diseases in older patients, as well as providing specific guidance on the diagnosis and management of the commoner conditions ...

Patient satisfaction and the elderly
Social Science & Medicine, 1996There is considerable current interest in patient satisfaction surveys; among other things they are often used to measure quality in health care. However, there are many unresolved issues concerning them, including how they might best be conducted. Some have challenged their raison d'-etre, arguing that they rely on unproven assumptions -1; Williams ...

Delirium is a mental disorder characterized by disturbances in consciousness, orientation, memory, thought, perception, and behavior, of acute onset and fluctuating course. Many more elderly individuals will present for treatment in acute care now than in the past as the proportion of patients in the geriatric age group increases. Physiological changes in the elderly affect the way their bodies handle and react to various drugs, and this needs to be kept in mind during the management of these patients in acute care.
