Despite claims that "data is dead," low-tech factors such as sampling errors and inaccurate likely-voter models were probably most responsible.

This report examines accuracy and bias in national and subnational preelection polls conducted during the 2008 presidential election cycle. The analyses indicate that, despite concerns about poll methodology voiced during the election cycle, polls across the board generally performed quite well in 2008.

The Chicago Record poll of the presidential election of 1896 was an enormous, multistate mail survey. Unfortunately, its results were incredible. The newspaper attempted to correct the results, making perhaps the first ever attempt to deal with nonresponse bias, but did not have much success.
