Manipulating electoral laws in Singapore
Electoral Studies, 2013The literature on electoral authoritarianism has drawn attention to the use of democratic electoral institutions for undemocratic gains. This paper adds to this body of work by showing how a sophisticated hegemonic party in Singapore manipulated its majoritarian electoral system to “manufacture” its legislative supermajority.

The New Japanese Electoral Law
American Political Science Review, 1926A new statute for the election of members of the House of Representatives was promulgated in Japan on May 5, 1925, and will be applicable in the next general election. It is Japan's fourth electoral law, the previous ones having been promulgated in 1889, 1900, and 1919, respectively.

This chapter examines four topics and makes certain predictions about the future of our electoral laws. The topics examined are: the separate Māori seats, the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, a fixed parliamentary term, and the term of Parliament. Viewed dispassionately, three of those four features warrant reform.
