In this chapter, electric steelmaking is introduced with a short review: share, raw materials, operation, typical equipment, off-gas treatment, emissions. Electric-based steelmaking enjoys a much comfortable position than integrated classical blast furnace—oxygen steelmaking facilities, regarding greenhouse emissions.

Electric Arc Furnace Processes
1997The electric arc furnace processing of oxide ceramics is a well-established and widely-used industrial technology. Raw materials are readily melted together by joule and radiant heating to form substantially large liquid volumes. These are refined if necessary with carbon and additions of metal scavenging agents such as iron, and the product is then ...

The tapping of electric furnaces is a hot, physically demanding, and potentially dangerous job. Noise levels often exceed the OSHA limits. To improve the work environment as well as improve productivity, several electric furnaces in Japan worked together with the Tokyo Institute of Technology to develop remote controlled manipulators for tapping.

The impact of electrical disturbances on the casting of an arc furnace
2012 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS) Proceedings, 2012Arc furnaces are among the most disturbing loads connected to the high voltage systems, due to the strong non-linearity and the intrinsic variability of the arc. Generally, they are supplied by dedicated lines and proper actions are taken to mitigate the injection of disturbances in the network. However, situations occur where a cluster of arc furnaces

Energetically optimized control of an electric arc furnace
Proceedings of the 2004 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications, 2004., 2005The control concept described here is based on an existing control system for three phase arc furnaces that uses the impedances of the three phases as control variables. It calculates the impedance set points in such a way that the electrical energy is optimally transferred into the scrap without damaging the furnace vessel. To keep the abrasion of the

Hydrothermal treatment of electric arc furnace dust
Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2011In this study, ZnO crystals were fabricated from electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) after alkaline leaching, purification and hydrothermal treatment. The effects of temperature, duration, pH, and solid/liquid ratio on ZnO crystal morphology and size were investigated. Results show a high reaction temperature capable of accelerating the dissolution of ZnO

Validation and reception of electric arc furnace transformers
2016 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2016The electric arc furnace transformer is one of the most important devices in the steelmaking industry. Installing used transformers is very common nowadays taking into account the huge investment that represents the acquisition of a new one. The transformer is subjected to electrical stress, thus it is necessary to assess the wear and tear levels in ...

Electric arc current control for an electric arc furnace based on fuzzy logic
2015 IEEE 10th Jubilee International Symposium on Applied Computational Intelligence and Informatics, 2015This paper presents a current control for a three-phase electric arc furnace. In order to do this, a model of the electric arc was used. Using this model, the waveforms for the arc current, arc voltage and voltage-current characteristic of the electric arc were illustrated for different arc lengths.

The article considers the features of electric mode control for modern shaft electric arc furnaces and electric arc furnaces with continuous scrap charging by the Consteel conveyor. Both types of furnaces are characterized by the problem of thermal overload of the water-cooled panels and refractory lining in the hot zone of furnace.
