Electric fires are of three types: silica-sheathed, fireclay mounted, and exposed rod. Children who grasp the heating element of electric fires of the exposed-rod type sustain severe burns of the hand. Wynn Williams (1955) reviewed 100 cases of children with burnt hands and noted that 36% were due to electric fires.
