Electrical injuries may occur from high or low voltage contact. Low voltage injuries usually occur in the home, tetany may lead to sustained contact, and dangerous cardiac disturbances often result. High voltage injuries are usually work related and result from brief contact but may cause serious tissue destruction and secondary injuries.

From January 1979 to January 1987, 125 patients were treated in our Centre for various electrical injuries. Among them, 85 patients were over 15 years of age (89.4 per cent were males and 10.6 per cent females) and 40 patients were below 15 years of age (92.5 per cent were males and 7.5 per cent females).

Never underestimate the severity of the injury. History taking must be meticulous and thorough. Accurately assess percent of skin loss--fluid resuscitate as necessary. Monitor for the presence of cardiac arrhythmias. Observe for the development of compartment syndrome. Observe volume and colour of passed urine. Seek expert opinion.
