ADDA: Almost direct drive architecture for solar high power electrical propulsion in new generation spacecrafts

2012 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), 2012
This paper proposes a novel electrical power system architecture capable to efficiently transfer energy from a solar generator to high power electric thrusters of a spacecraft. The architecture is based on a maximum power point tracker that acts on a DC/DC converter connected between a subsection of the solar generator and the thrusters.

The Sequential Switching Shunt Maximum Power Regulator and its Application in the Electric Propulsion System of a Spacecraft

2007 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, 2007
This paper describes a baseline solution of a Power Conditioning and Distribution Unit (PCDU) for Electrical Propulsion (EP) systems. The solution adopted uses two high efficiency, low-mass power regulators; a solar array regulator (SAR) based on the classical Sequential Switching Shunt Regulator with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) capability ...

Accommodation Aspects of Electric Propulsion with Power Processing Units and the Spacecraft

9th Annual International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference, 2011
The accommodation of Electric Propulsion and the associated Power Processing Units within a Spacecraft must lead to an integrated system providing full function and performance. This process starts with a proper specification of the electrical interface between thrusters and electronics, the handling of high voltages in a distributed harness, the ...
