Electro-osmosis in a frozen soil

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1991
Abstract An experimental program that measured the electro-osmotic conductivity variation with temperature in a frozen soil showed that the conductivity remained constant at the value measured at 22°C until about 0.4°C below the freezing point depression. Below this temperature the electro-osmotic conductivity decreases rapidly.

Influence of electro-osmosis activation time on vacuum electro-osmosis consolidation of a dredged slurry

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2018
Combining vacuum preloading with electro-osmosis of a dredged slurry is a significantly effective technology for ground improvement. Despite extensive research, the mechanism of vacuum preloading combined with electro-osmosis is still not properly understood, especially regarding the optimum electro-osmosis activation time.

Electro-Osmosis on Inhomogeneously Charged Surfaces

Physical Review Letters, 1995
The electro-osmotic flow generated by an electric field ${\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{E}}_{\mathrm{ext}}$ in a fluid bounded by surfaces bearing a charge varying in space is considered. Focusing on a slab geometry, I characterize the formation of steady convective rolls and describe their morphology as a function of the slab thickness.

Electrothermal ac electro-osmosis

Applied Physics Letters, 2009
Two ac polarization mechanisms, charge accumulation due to electrode double layer charging and bulk permittivity/conductivity gradients generated by Joule heating, are combined in the double layer by introducing zwitterions to produce a new ac electrokinetic pump with the largest velocity (>1 mm/s) and flow penetration depth (100 μm) reported ...

Electro-Osmosis in Squid Axons

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 1970
When electro-osmosis is observed through a substance (or tissue) certain inferences can be made about the fine structure of the substance. These include the presence of a zeta potential whose sign is the same as that of the electrode towards which water moves, and the presence of interstices or channels large enough to allow ions to move through them ...

Electro-osmosis at the surface of phospholipid bilayer membranes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1982
The electro-osmotic velocity is the velocity of a fluid near an interface produced by an electric field parallel to a surface. The velocity adjacent to fixed phospholipid bilayer membranes was measured by observing the velocity of small vesicles suspended in the fluid.

Drying characteristics of electro-osmosis dewatered sludge

Environmental Technology, 2016
Electro-osmotic dewatering (EDW) is one of the effective deeply dewatering technologies that is suitable for treating sludge with 55-80% of moisture content. Regarding EDW as the pre-treatment process of drying or incinerating, this article investigated the drying characteristics of electro-osmosis-dewatered sludge, including shear stress test, drying ...

Universal electro-osmosis formulae for porous media

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2008
Approximate analytical formulae valid for any porous media with elongated pores are derived for the electro-osmotic coefficient alpha and for the average ionic concentration n . A macroscopic Debye-Hückel length kappa (-)(-1) based on n is introduced. Simultaneously, the electro-osmotic coefficient alpha is systematically calculated for various media ...

Electro-osmosis and flexo-electricity in the dowser texture

The European Physical Journal E, 2019
Due to its low symmetry, the long-lived pseudo-planar texture, dubbed "the dowser texture", has a flexo-electric spontaneous polarisation [Formula: see text]. Being degenerated, the dowser texture is easily aligned by the electric torque [Formula: see text] acting on [Formula: see text]. The dowser texture can also be aligned by Poiseuille flows driven
