Multi-meshes coupled cathodes enhanced performance of electrochemical water softening system

Separation and Purification Technology, 2019
Abstract The high electrode area requirement limited the applications of electrochemical water softening technology, despite of conspicuous advantages. This work introduces an electrochemical water softening system with multi-meshes coupled cathodes to address fouling in industrial circulating cooling water systems.

Electrochemical Ion-Exchange Regeneration and Fluidized Bed Crystallization for Zero-Liquid-Discharge Water Softening

Environmental Science & Technology, 2016
This research investigated the use of an electrochemical system for regenerating ion-exchange media and for promoting the crystallization of hardness minerals in a fluidized bed crystallization reactor (FBCR). The closed-loop process eliminates the creation of waste brine solutions that are normally produced when regenerating ion-exchange media.

Investigation on an electrochemical pilot equipment for water softening with an automatic descaling system: Parameter optimization and energy consumption analysis

Journal of Cleaner Production, 2020
Abstract Electrochemical water softening (EWS) technology is considered to be a very promising descaling method due to its superiorities in clean, efficient and water-saving ability, although limited by the cleaning of cathode scale. Herein, an innovative EWS device coupled with an automatic descaling module was manufactured and applied to treat the ...

Coupling of Electric and Flow Fields to Enhance Ion Transport for Energy-Efficient Electrochemical Tap-Water Softening

Environmental Science & Technology
Electrochemical-induced precipitation is a sustainable approach for tap-water softening, but the hardness removal performance and energy efficiency are vastly limited by the ultraslow ion transport and the superlow local HCO3-/Ca2+ ratio compared to the industrial scenarios. To tackle the challenges, we herein report an energy-efficient electrochemical

Turning waste into resource: Metal framework-scale composite cathode overcomes limitations of low efficiency and cathode failure in electrochemical water softening

Water Research
Despite years of development, electrochemical water softening continues to face challenges in achieving high softening efficiency and maintaining long-term cathode stability. To address these issues, this study builds upon the characteristics of membrane-free electrochemical water softening and prior research by employing a large-pore stainless steel ...
