Improvement of SAR Accuracy by Combining Two SAR Quantification Methods for Small Animals in Reverberation Chamber Above 10 GHz

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Two measurement-based methods are presented to quantify the whole-body-averaged specific absorption rate (WBA-SAR) and local SAR for small animals in a medium-size reverberation chamber (RC) for a bio-effect experiment at frequencies above 10 GHz.

Miniature Soft Robot With Magnetically Reprogrammable Surgical Functions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Miniature soft robots have great prospects to revolutionize minimally invasive treatments. Here we present a miniature soft robot, which can be reprogrammed to perform five surgical functionalities with six‐degrees‐of‐freedom motions. This soft robot can prospectively make minimally invasive surgery considerably safer and painless, and enable ...

Generating Unconventional Spin‐Orbit Torques With Patterned Phase Gradients in Tungsten Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A key aim in spintronics is to achieve current‐induced magnetization switching via spin‐orbit torques without external magnetic fields. For this, the focus of recent work has been on introducing controlled lateral gradients across ferromagnet/heavy‐metal devices, giving variations in thickness, composition, or interface quality.

A Geometrically Transient Platform for Bioelectronic Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Minimally invasive bioelectronic implants often compromise performance for smaller sizes. To resolve this optimization dilemma, a wireless bioelectronic implant with a transient geometry is introduced (MiFi). The origami‐inspired device miniaturizes up to sixfold for syringe insertion and autonomously unfolds post‐implantation.

Characteristics of different charge transfer modes in upward flashes inferred from simultaneously measured currents and fields

open access: yesHigh Voltage, 2019
The authors present an analysis of different charge transfer modes during upward negative flashes. The analysis includes a total number of 94 pulses that occurred during two upward negative flashes recorded at the Säntis Tower.

Field‐Programmed Anisotropy in Magneto‐Piezoelectric Composites for Material‐Encoded Mechanoperception

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Field‐programmed anisotropy imparts material‐level intelligence to soft composites. Magnetic torque dynamics drive magneto‐piezoelectric nanowires from random dispersion into deterministic axial alignment. The resulting hierarchical percolation networks confine electromechanical coupling to specific axes and intrinsically decouple superposed force ...

Can Elastomers Combine Stiffness, Toughness and Fatigue Resistance?

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review studies how the molecular and macroscopic architecture of elastomers influence their mechanical properties including: stiffness, stretchability, toughness, fatigue resistance, and damping behavior. By linking the structure to performance, it proposes design principles for advanced elastomeric systems that combine mechanical properties ...

Ultra-Wideband Filtering 180° Hybrid Coupler With Super Wide Upper Stopband Using Swap Phase Inverter and Electromagnetic Bandgap Structures on Double-Sided Parallel-Strip Line

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
In this paper, a multifunctional 180° hybrid coupler is proposed, with an ultra-wideband filtering response and a super wide upper stopband. The component, realized with double-sided parallel-strip line (DSPSL), is built up on the basis of a ...
