Electromagnetic Coupling on an Atomic Scale

Light emission from a scanning tunneling microscope is used to investigate the electromagnetic coupling (EMC) of a metal tip and a metal sample. Subatomic scale modifications of the tip-sample region cause spectral shifts of the fluorescence as demonstrated for a monatomic step and by variation of the tip-sample distance.

A time domain simulator for analyzing non-linear coupled electromagnetic and micromagnetic phenomena in complex magnetic structures is introduced. The simulator employs a new integral formulation that accurately accounts for the Eddy currents and captures the dominant physics.

The presence of connectors or other shield interruptions can seriously degrade the EMI protection provided by the braid of an otherwise well-shielded cable system. The paper presents a methodology to determine the internal response of a discontinuous shielded cable to an exciting electromagnetic field.
