Terahertz Waveguiding in Silicon-Core Fibers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We propose the use of a silicon-core optical fiber for terahertz (THz) waveguide applications. Finite-difference time-domain simulations have been performed based on a cylindrical waveguide with a silicon core and silica cladding.

Mechanical Metamaterials with Negative Compressibility Transitions

open access: yes, 2012
When tensioned, ordinary materials expand along the direction of the applied force. Here, we explore network concepts to design metamaterials exhibiting negative compressibility transitions, during which a material undergoes contraction when tensioned ...

Direct digital control of an efficient silicon+lequid crystal phase shifter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We demonstrate a phase shifter based on a silicon slot waveguide infiltrated with liquid crystal. We achieve a phase shift of 73 pi for a 5V drive voltage, with a voltage-length product of 0.022V.mm around 1V. We can drive the phase shifter directly with
