Locating Damage Using Integrated Global-Local Approach with Wireless Sensing System and Single-Chip Impedance Measurement Device

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2014
This study developed an integrated global-local approach for locating damage on building structures. A damage detection approach with a novel embedded frequency response function damage index (NEFDI) was proposed and embedded in the Imote2.NET-based ...

Sandwich Face Layer Debonding Detection and Size Estimation by Machine-Learning-Based Evaluation of Electromechanical Impedance Measurements

open access: yesSensors, 2023
The present research proposes a two-step physics- and machine-learning(ML)-based electromechanical impedance (EMI) measurement data evaluation approach for sandwich face layer debonding detection and size estimation in structural health monitoring (SHM ...

Interface monitoring of steel-concrete-steel sandwich structures using piezoelectric transducers

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2019
Steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures have important advantages over conventional concrete structures, however, bond-slip between the steel plate and concrete may lead to a loss of composite action, resulting in a reduction of stiffness and ...

Creep Properties and Deformation Mechanism of Additively Manufactured NiAl‐CrMo Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured NiAl‐CrMo composites contain numerous interfaces and cell boundaries that control their creep response. At 700°C under high applied stress, creep is dominated by dislocation‐controlled power‐law mechanisms. At 800°C–900°C and lower stresses, creep is primarily diffusion‐controlled along cell boundaries.

Structural Health Monitoring Using High-Frequency Electromechanical Impedance Signatures

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2010
An overview of recent advances in electromechanical impedance- (EMI-) based structural health monitoring is presented in this paper. The basic principle of the EMI method is to use high-frequency excitation to sense the local area of a structure. Changes

Soft Mechanical‐Electrical Logic Using Liquid Metal‐Filled 3D‐Printed Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present 3D‐printed soft mechanical–electrical logic elements that use liquid metal–filled silicone tubes actuated by thermoplastic polyurethane/polylactic acid (TPU/PLA) architectures to produce Boolean operations. Complementary normally open and normally closed unit cells perform repeatable binary transitions and can be combined into more complex ...

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Microstructure, Thermal Transport, and Dry‐Sliding Tribology of Powder‐Metallurgy Al7075 Composites Reinforced With Sol–Gel‐Derived ZnO–rGO Hybrid Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Sol–gel‐derived ZnO–rGO hybrid nanoparticles enable Al7075 powder‐metallurgy composites to achieve concurrent gains in hardness and thermal conductivity while markedly lowering friction and wear. The hybrid architecture couples ZnO‐based load support with rGO‐assisted lamellar sliding and heat spreading, revealing a promising route toward lightweight ...
