Excitation of Atoms by Electron Impact

1979
Publisher Summary This chapter points out some of the major advances that have been made in the past decade. The chapter treats a particular area where technical advance or improved understanding has made possible measurements that in many cases must be regarded as definitive.

Excitation of helium by electron impact

Journal of Applied Physics, 1981
A simple analytic central potential with two adjustable parameters is proposed for the helium atom. The potential parameters are obtained by appealing to the precise values of optical oscillator strengths calculated by Schiff et al. Using the Born approximation we calculate 1 1S–n 1P electron-impact excitation cross sections up to 5 keV. Good agreement

Threshold electron impact excitation

2011
Threshold electron impact spectra have been obtained for helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and carbon monoxide using a velocity-selected electron beam. Zero energy electrons ejected at excitation thresholds are scavenged by sulfur hexafluoride and the resulting SF(6)¯ ions are detected using a mass filter. Optically forbidden transitions are observed
