Journal of Endodontics, 2004The accuracy of three electronic apex locators (EALs) (Justy II, Root ZX, and Neosono Ultima EZ) is evaluated, together with the concordance of the measurements obtained by two different operators. Twenty single-root human teeth were used, sectioning the crown to gain access to the root canal.

Effect of Electronic Apex Locators on Cardiac Pacemaker Function
Journal of Endodontics, 2002The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of five electronic apex locators on pacemaker function in vitro. A Biotronik Actros DR+ pacemaker was evaluated at maximum sensitivity on a flat bench top. The pacemaker lead, electronic apex locator, and oscilloscope were connected across a 150-ohm resistor.

Evaluation of the accuracy of the neosono-D electronic apex locator
Journal of Endodontics, 1984The efficacy of an electronic device to locate the apical foramen was evaluated in vivo in 24 mature and 5 immature root canals in human teeth. The results were obtained by direct microscopic and radiographic measurements. The device was found to be consistently accurate in mature teeth but inaccurate in immature teeth.

In vitro evaluation of the accuracy of several electronic apex locators
Journal of Endodontics, 1995This study describes two tests of the in vitro accuracy of several models of electronic canal length measuring devices (ECLMDs) using a gelatin test model and extracted human teeth with fully formed apices. In part 1, four previously untested ECLMDs were used in dry canals after access and pulpectomy.

Refu'at ha-peh veha-shinayim (1993), 2010Electronic Apex Locators (EAL) have become widely used in the last decade. The first apex locator was introduced in 1962, based on a constant electrical resistance (6.5 K.) between the oral mucosa and periodontal ligament. The first and second generations of EAL were inaccurate and could not detect the apex in the presence of conducting fluids.
