With No Attention Specifically Directed to It, Rhythmic Sound Does Not Automatically Facilitate Visual Task Performance

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2022
In a century where humans and machines—powered by artificial intelligence or not—increasingly work together, it is of interest to understand human processing of multi-sensory stimuli in relation to attention and working memory.

Diffuse sound field synthesis: Towards practical source layouts

open access: yesActa Acustica
In an ideal isotropic diffuse sound field, uncorrelated plane waves arrive uniformly from all directions. Recent theoretical work has shown that uncorrelated sources arranged on a spherical surface can also be used to synthesize diffuse fields that ...

Effect of HRTFs and head motion on auditory-visual localization in real and virtual studio environments

open access: yesActa Acustica
When localizing sound sources in natural or virtual environments, multisensory integration that combines auditory and visual cues is often involved. This study aims to determine the effect of (non-)individual head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) on ...

Bi-Smoothed Functional Independent Component Analysis for EEG Artifact Removal

open access: yesMathematics, 2021
Motivated by mapping adverse artifactual events caused by body movements in electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, we present a functional independent component analysis based on the spectral decomposition of the kurtosis operator of a smoothed principal

A Bitrate-Scalable Variational Recurrent Mel-Spectrogram Coder for Real-Time Resynthesis-Based Speech Coding

open access: yesIEEE Access
This paper introduces a method for real-time speech coding that combines a binary-latent-vector variational recurrent neural network for mel-spectrogram coding with a non-autoregressive convolutional vocoder for waveform reconstruction. To enable bitrate

Theory of continuously phased planar sources for sound reinforcement

open access: yesActa Acustica
Modern large-scale sound reinforcement systems use line-source loudspeaker arrays with the goal to establish a desired direct sound level decay profile along a line into the audience by adjusting the splay angles or delays between the individual ...

An Edible Chitosan‐Based Acoustic Sensor for Sound‐Responsive Actuation in Edible Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces an edible acoustic sensor for robotic food and edible robotics. Built from a chitosan piezoelectric film between gold electrodes, the sensor enables acoustic communication through ON/OFF keying. Integrated into an edible robot with pneumatically actuated arms and neck, it responds to high‐frequency tones.

Mechanistic Origins of Chemo‐Mechanical Instability and Failure in Solid‐State Lithium‐Sulfur Electrodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Conversion‐induced sulfur expansion generates strong mechanical constraints and localized stresses within solid‐state Li‐S cathodes. Heterogeneous solid‐electrolyte confinement creates tensile strain‐energy hotspots that govern particle cracking. Larger sulfur particles accelerate fracture, while higher porosity relaxes constraint and delays damage ...
