An Energy Framework to Control Viscoelastic Semi‐Active Devices in Plan‐Wise One‐Way Asymmetric Systems

open access: yesStructural Control and Health Monitoring, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
This study proposes new strategies for the semi‐active control of the dynamic response of a plan‐wise asymmetrical structural system using viscoelastic devices. Different from some literature proposals, these innovative strategies are designed to be immediately interpretable, aiming to optimize the different terms of the energy balance equation through

Characterization and Testing of an Electrorheological Fluid Valve for Control of ERF Actuators

open access: yesActuators, 2015
Previous studies of electrorheological fluids (ERFs) were motivated by brake, clutch, damping, haptic and resistive applications, but never motivated towards developing an ERF based-hydraulic rotary actuator. One design to make such an actuator is to use

Intercalation-enhanced electric polarization and chain formation of nano-layered particles

open access: yes, 2005
Microscopy observations show that suspensions of synthetic and natural nano-layered smectite clay particles submitted to a strong external electric field undergo a fast and extended structuring.

Static shear modulus of electrorheological fluids [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2006
We report measurements of the static shear modulus of electrorheological (ER) fluids consisting of water-wetted silica microspheres in silicone oil. A shear-annealing method, using creep-recovery (CR) cycles under an external electric field, is used to enhance ER properties of the fluid.

A Novel Variable‐Stiffness Tail Based on Layer‐Jamming for Robotic Fish

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 6, Issue 11, November 2024.
The design, fabrication, and modeling methods of a novel tail for robotic fish are proposed. The tail can adjust stiffness over a wide range while maintaining ideal hydrodynamic properties and optimal stiffness distribution, which will improve the swimming efficiency of robotic fish.

Nonlinear ER effects in an ac applied field

open access: yes, 2001
The electric field used in most electrorheological (ER) experiments is usually quite high, and nonlinear ER effects have been theoretically predicted and experimentally measured recently.

Structure-Enhanced Yield Stress of Magnetorheological Fluids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The yield stress of magnetorheological (MR) fluids depends on the induced solid structure. Since thick columns have a yield stress much higher than a single-chain structure, we improve the yield stress of MR fluids by changing the fluid microstructure ...

High Curvature of Polymer‐Based Miniaturized Flexible Actuator at Very Low Electric Field

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 309, Issue 11, November 2024.
This work proposes a design and polarization routine that significantly improves the deflection of multilayer organic actuators, allows deflection in two directions and eliminates prestressing problems inherent in multilayer devices. Thanks to cost‐effective and industrially scalable manufacturing process of devices, this new approach opens new ...

Nanoparticle enhanced evaporation of liquids: A case study of silicone oil and water

open access: yes, 2012
Evaporation is a fundamental physical phenomenon, of which many challenging questions remain unanswered. Enhanced evaporation of liquids in some occasions is of enormous practical significance.

On the Optimal Control of a Class of Non-Newtonian Fluids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We consider optimal control problems of systems governed by stationary, incompressible generalized Navier-Stokes equations with shear dependent viscosity in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional domain.
