Electrostatically Driven CO−π Aromatic Interactions

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2019
A series of N-arylimide molecular balances were developed to study and measure carbonyl-aromatic (CO-π) interactions. Carbonyl oxygens were observed to form repulsive interactions with unsubstituted arenes and attractive interactions with electron-deficient arenes with multiple electron-withdrawing groups.

Electrostatic ion—solvent interaction

Electrochimica Acta, 1991
Abstract A new method is described for determination of the electrostatic component of the free energy of ion transfer from one solvent to another. The method is based on the compensation of the solvophobic effects in the difference of the redox potentials of two oxidation steps of large compact particles.

Close-Range Electrostatic Interactions in Proteins

ChemBioChem, 2002
Two types of noncovalent bonding interactions are present in protein structures, specific and nonspecific. Nonspecific interactions are mostly hydrophobic and van der Waals. Specific interactions are largely electrostatic. While the hydrophobic effect is the major driving force in protein folding, electrostatic interactions are important in protein ...

Electrostatic interactions between model mitochondrial membranes

Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces, 2005
Lipids are very diverse in both their respective structures and functions; and cells exquisitely control membrane composition. One intriguing issue is the specific role of lipids in modulating the physical properties of membranes. Cardiolipin (CL) is a unique four-tailed, doubly negatively charged lipid found predominately within the inner ...

Electrostatically Confined Nanoparticle Interactions and Dynamics

Langmuir, 2008
We report integrated evanescent wave and video microscopy measurements of three-dimensional trajectories of 50, 100, and 250 nm gold nanoparticles electrostatically confined between parallel planar glass surfaces separated by 350 and 600 nm silica colloid spacers.

Electrostatic Interactions Between Molecules

1996
Abstract Suppose that molecule A is located at position A in some global coordinate system. The particles of this molecule are at positions a relative to A, i.e., at positions A+ a. We want to evaluate the potential at a point B where we shall in due course put another molecule.

Electrostatic interactions in proteins

2005
Electrostatic interactions play a key role in determining the structure, stability, binding affinity and chemical properties, and hence the biological reactivity, of proteins and nucleic acids. The goal of electrostatic calculations is to take the structural information provided by crystallography or NMR and obtain a realistic description of the ...

Electrostatic interactions in macromolecules

Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 1994
Abstract Electrostatic effects in macromolecules depend on a delicate balance between charge-charge and charge-solvent interactions. The past year has seen continued development in the treatment of both charge distributions, and of solvent, along with significant improvements in the algorithms used.

Bounds on electrostatic interactions

International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, 2002
AbstractThis article deals with two topics: bounds on electrostatic interactions and new approaches to the expansion of electron densities in ab initio calculations on large systems. Schwartz inequalities derived from positive definite self‐energy integrals are reviewed and new bounds on electrostatic interactions consisting only of kinetic energy and ...

Mapping electrostatic interactions in macromolecular associations

Journal of Molecular Biology, 1991
In the association of electron transfer proteins, electrostatics has been proposed to play a role in maintaining the stability and specificity of the biomolecular complexes formed. An excellent model system is the interaction between mammalian cytochrome b5 and cytochrome c, in which the X-ray structures of the individual components reveal a ...
